Newsletter_December 2024

Merry Christmas

As the festive season unfolds and the spirit of giving fills the air, we extend our warmest greetings to you, our invaluable donors & supporters. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey to make a positive impact on the lives of street children for the past 22 years.

Celebrating 22 Years of Transformative Change: Success Stories That Warm the Heart

This December, we're excited to share the remarkable stats that have unfolded through your unwavering support. Over the past two decades, your generosity has enabled us to provide shelter, education, and a nurturing environment for countless street children. We're thrilled to witness the transformative power of your contributions in action.

Stories of Hope and Resilience

Our blog is filled with inspiring narratives of children who have overcome adversity and transformed their lives with the help of our programs. From educational milestones to personal triumphs, each story is a testament to the positive change that can be achieved when compassionate hearts come together.

Your Impact in Numbers

As we reflect on the past year, we're excited to share the tangible impact that your donations have made. From the number of children provided with a safe haven to the educational opportunities created, every statistic is a testament to the collective strength of our community.

A Sneak Peek into 2025: What Lies Ahead

Looking forward, we have exciting plans and initiatives on the horizon. Your continued support ensures that we can expand our reach, create more success stories, and work towards a future where no child has to endure life on the streets.

We have potential donors to assist us with the building of a learning centre / multi-purpose building on the land next to our iCare houses in Lower Illovo.  The sale of this land went through the day before lockdown, so we are thrilled that things are slowly starting to happen.  We will be appealing to donors for fittings such as tiles, kitchen fittings, various building materials etc in the near future.

Expressing Our Gratitude

As we express our gratitude in this season of giving, we want to emphasize how crucial your role is in shaping a brighter future for these children. Your generosity is not just a donation; it's a lifeline that propels dreams and aspirations.

Stay Connected

Follow us on social media to stay updated on our latest endeavours and success stories. Your engagement and advocacy play a vital role in spreading awareness and garnering support for our cause.

Once again, thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Wishing you and yours a Blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with hope and happiness.

Once again, a sincere thank you to each and everyone of you for your assistance to iCare - from monetary donations, goods and food donations, volunteering in so many different ways, with friend like yourselves, our jobs are made so much easier.

AWARENESS

The staff from iCare took to the streets last Friday and did a street awareness campaign. We concentrated on the "hotspots" where the beggars like to beg for money mainly at traffic lights - we concentrated on the Windermere area and specifically Argyle Road.  Sadly there are still many motorists giving these beggars money.  The purpose for this campaign is to educate the public NOT to give people money (especially children) begging at the traffic lights as it only enables and prolongs their stay on the streets, which in turn often leads to more serious problems.Especially at this time of the year, we have that spirit of giving, but sadly, giving to beggars perpetuates the cycle of dependency and discourages individuals from seeking long-term solutions to improve their lives. By supporting reputable NGOs, eg iCare, donors can contribute to breaking this cycle and fostering positive change. We have many success stories of the lives that we have successfully changed over the past 22 years. Visit our website for more info: www.icare.co.za, and please remember to NOT give beggars money, rather donate to a worthy organisation who actually helps to change their lives.

DROP IN CENTRE (Hope Centre)
Our number of boys visiting the drop in centre (Hope Centre) in Windermere,  has increased considerably this year and averages  around 15 children a day.
We provide  them with all their basic needs:  warm showers, 2 cooked meals, medical requirements, programs, and psycho-social interventions with our in-house social workers.  This is all in preparation of the boys entering our Rehabilitation Program.  As last year, we have registered almost 100 boys who have visited  our drop in centre this year.

iCARE HOUSES
We currently have 26 children in our three  iCare family homes in Lower Illovo, and  6 house parents.  We once again salute the houseparents and children for keeping their spirits so high during this crazy year.  The boys have continued to do their best at school and have shown true resilience during these trying times.

We were so proud of many of the boys who brought certificates home with them at the end of the term.  One of our boys came first in his grade - we are so proud of him! (pictured above)

Well done to the boys and of course their house parents for all the extra work they do with these children in the afternoons - it is sure paying off when we see theri results.

REHABILITATION
The iCare Rehabilitation Program at Seed of Hope in Malagazi, Amanzimtoti con-tinues to be a great asset in our iCare Cycle.    We continue to face a few challenges there but always seem to make a plan.  On the good side, the boys, under the amazing guidance of house parent Elton, have cultivated a beautiful vegetable garden, yielding some amazing vegetables.
The boys have also been rearing chicks from a day old and have proven to be wonderful nurturers and so proud of their growing chicks.

Our older youth continue with their Sakhimpilo Program at Jump Youth Mission in Buffelsdraai.    Once they have completed the Sakhimpilo Course, which includes a Life Skills and a Job Preparation Course - they then complete their Skills Training Course.

SKILLS
Once the boys have successfully completed the Sakhimpilo Course,  their next step is  Skills Training.
18 young men have graduated with a Certified Skills Course.  Well done Boys!! I Care are so proud of you and your achievements.

Once the boys have completed their Skills Training, we assist them in finding internships, and assist them whilst getting on their feet.

We are always looking for internship possibilities, so please let us know if you could be of assistance here.

School Shoe Drive

This year we approached schools appealing for the learners pre loved school shoes.  The response was wonderful - a huge thank you to the schools and their learners for supporting this drive - every child deserves shoes on their feet - and this is going to make an enormous difference to many many underprivileged learners.
Providing essential items like shoes can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need, especially when it comes to education and well-being
